Something is wrong with the credentials that you are using to log into the mail server. You'll need to check with your host regarding the correct credentials.

But why? I had a similar problem. I have two virtual servers. My dev server is a virtual Win2k8 server on a local box of mine. The test email works fine using smtpout.secureserver.net with my creds. On a GoDaddy virtual Win2k8 server with the same settings, I get the error message. On a whim, I changed the SMTP Server to s2smtpout.secureserver.net per your post and everything seems to work. Can anyone shed light on to what's going on?
Thanks,
Mike

Most likely, the SMTP server is configured to reject "relaying." This is a standard way of configuring and is intended to prevent spammers from hijacking the SMTP server to send mail.
The way to fix this is to configure the SMTP server to relay mail that originates from the DotNetNuke site. Usually, your host's technical support folks can do this for you, or tell you how to configure the SMTP server connection within DotNetNuke to conform to their rules.
And ... this is possibly the #1 issue that confronts new DotNetNuke administrators.

Thanks, Joe. I'll dig into this with GoDaddy. The server is fairly "basic", i.e. 1 role: Web Server (IIS) and 3 Features installed. I don't have any SMTP server settings enabled. I've included a snap shot of the settings.
Would you be able to point me to a KB article, etc? I'll let you know what I hear from GoDaddy.
BTW, this is a fantastic site.

On the DotNetNuke side of things, you configure your connection to the SMTP server from the Host Settings page.
To do this, you need to specify credentials for the SMTP server. If you host doesn't help, or while you are waiting for help, you can generally use gmail's SMTP server. To do that, you'll need to have a gmail account. And, if you look on the gmail help pages, they have instructions for connecting a remote client to the server.

Hi Joe - Here's what I received from GoDaddy:
"Regarding sending mail from your server, you will use the s2smtpout.secureserver.net address. The smtpout.secureserver.net is not a hosting relay server but an smtp server for email clients..."
They got back to me within a day to my email request. I have the email accounts through GoDaddy as well as the virtual server. The email accounts were through FairPoint, but that's another story.
The issue seems to be resolved. Joe, are you aware of any other similar issues using virtual servers, emails, etc?
Thanks again,
Mike

o, no real issues at all. You just have to be able to connect to and use an SMTP server. All of the hosts of which I am aware provide SMTP servers with their hosting packages. You just need to find out how to use the appropriate server.
And, seems like this was easy once you asked the right question!
